Visit Your Local Quilt Shop Day

What the day is

Visit Your Local Quilt Shop Day is observed on January 25. It exists to send people into independent fabric shops, which is a category of business under obvious pressure.

Origin and background

A quilt is three layers: a decorative top, a layer of batting for warmth, and a backing, held together by the stitching that gives the craft its name. Piecing the top from small fabric pieces is the part people picture, and the quilting itself, the stitching through all three layers, is the structural work and often the slower half.

What makes quilts historically valuable is that they were made by people who left very little other written record. Women's domestic labor is largely absent from archives, and a quilt is a dated, signed, physical document of materials, skill, and sometimes of events. Album and signature quilts carry names in ink and thread, and quilts made for weddings, departures and mourning record relationships that appear nowhere else. Museums now treat them as primary sources.

The quilts of Gee's Bend in Alabama are the clearest case of the craft being reassessed. Made across generations in an isolated Black community from work clothes and whatever fabric was available, they were exhibited in major art museums from 2002 and read as abstract composition of a very high order, which they plainly are.

One widely repeated story is worth treating carefully: the claim that quilts hung as coded signals on the Underground Railroad rests on a single late oral account and is regarded by most historians as unsupported.

How to take part

  • Go to an independent shop and buy something, which is the actual request.
  • Ask what they recommend for a first project. Most will spend real time on it.
  • Look at Gee's Bend quilts, which do not need any craft interest to be worth seeing.
  • Label anything you make with your name and the date. That is what makes it a document.
  • Find out whether a family quilt exists and who made it, while somebody remembers.
