A Room Of One’s Own Day

What the day is

A Room of One's Own Day is observed on January 25, the birthday of Virginia Woolf, born in London in 1882. It takes its name from her 1929 essay.

Origin and background

The essay grew out of lectures given to students at two women's colleges at Cambridge, and its argument is more concrete than the title suggests. Woolf's claim is that a woman needs money and a private room in order to write fiction, and she names a figure for the money. The material conditions come first. Without an income of her own she is dependent, and without a door that closes she is interruptible by anyone in the household at any moment, which is fatal to sustained work.

The most quoted section invents a sister for Shakespeare, equally gifted, and follows what would have happened to her: no schooling, no apprenticeship, no access to the stage, and a life closed off long before the talent could be used. The point is not that no woman wrote. It is that ability is useless without the conditions that let it develop, and that the absence of great women in the historical record is evidence about the conditions rather than about the women.

She also traces what did survive, the novelists of the preceding century, and notes how many of them wrote in shared sitting rooms, concealing the pages when somebody came in.

The essay has aged unevenly, and Woolf's assumptions about class and race have drawn sustained and fair criticism. The core argument, that creative work requires time, money and uninterrupted space, and that these are distributed unequally, has not needed revising.

How to take part

  • Read the essay. It is short, conversational and much funnier than its reputation.
  • Notice who in your household actually gets uninterrupted time, and whether that is shared fairly.
  • Claim an hour behind a closed door, and treat it as non-negotiable.
  • Support a library, which is where people without a spare room get one.
  • Read something by a writer who had to write in a shared room.
