About WhatNationalDay
In short: a free, ad-supported reference to 1,332 national days, holidays and observances, organized by the day they fall on.
What you will find here
Every entry says what the day is, when it is observed, where it came from where that is known, and some simple ways to take part. You can browse by month, open any date to see everything observed on it, orsearch and filter the full list by subject.
How dates work
Some holidays always fall on the same date. Others follow a rule, such as the third Friday of a month or the Tuesday of the first full week of May, so they move from year to year. We store the rule rather than a single date, so a floating holiday shows the right date for the year you are looking at. Dates are shown for the US Eastern timezone.
A note on "national" days
Most national days are not official. Governments proclaim only a few of them. The rest are started by organizations, brands, communities and enthusiasts, and a day can be marked by more than one group on different dates. Where a day has a clear origin we say so; where it does not, we do not invent one.
How the entries are written
Entries are written with the help of AI tools, and we check dates and facts against published sources. We do not treat that as a guarantee. Holiday information changes, sources disagree, and mistakes happen, so if something is wrong, please tell us and we will correct it.
How the site is paid for
WhatNationalDay is free to read. It earns money from display advertising and from Amazon affiliate links on holiday pages, which earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. Links and ads never change what an entry says. The privacy policy explains what that involves.
