True Confessions Day

What the day is

True Confessions Day is observed on March 15. The instruction to confess something needs a caveat, and the research supplies a useful one.

Origin and background

Secrecy was long assumed to be burdensome because of the effort of concealment, the work of monitoring conversations and not slipping. Later research pointed somewhere else. Studies asking people to log their secrets found that the harm tracked how often a secret came to mind during ordinary life, rather than how often they actively had to hide it. Most of the cost is rumination, not concealment, and the moments of actually keeping it hidden are comparatively rare.

That distinction matters, because it changes the remedy. If the problem is mind-wandering rather than active hiding, then telling one trusted person can help substantially even if the secret remains hidden from everybody else, and people who confide in someone report the secret weighing on them less afterward.

The literature on expressive writing points the same way, finding benefits from articulating difficult material even when nobody reads it, apparently because constructing a coherent account is itself the useful part.

The caveat is about direction. Confession relieves the confessor and can transfer a burden onto the listener, particularly where the disclosure concerns them. Telling someone a thing they cannot unhear, in order to feel lighter yourself, is a transfer rather than a resolution, and the honest test is whether the disclosure is for their benefit or yours.

The lighter version the day probably intends, admitting the embarrassing opinion or the small deception, is genuinely worth doing and usually lands better than expected.

How to take part

  • Tell one trusted person, which is most of the benefit.
  • Write it down if there is nobody to tell. That works too.
  • Ask whose burden a confession moves before making it.
  • Notice how often the secret comes to mind, which is where the cost sits.
  • Receive somebody's confession without repeating it.
