Proof Reading Day

What the day is

Proof Reading Day is observed on March 8. The reason proofreading your own work fails is a feature of reading rather than a lack of care.

Origin and background

Skilled reading is largely prediction. The eye does not crawl across every letter; it jumps in saccades, sampling a few points per line, while the mind fills in what it expects from context. This is why reading is fast, and why a familiar text is faster still. When the writer is the reader, the expectation is perfect: you know exactly what the sentence intended, so the prediction supplies the missing word and the eye never stops. The error is invisible precisely because you wrote it.

Every effective technique attacks that predictability. Reading aloud forces the mouth through every word, which the eye alone will skip. Reading the text backwards, sentence by sentence, removes the narrative that drives prediction. Changing the font, the column width, or printing it on paper alters the visual pattern enough to break the familiarity. And time does the same thing by degrading the memory of what you meant.

It also helps to separate the jobs. Proofreading is the final pass for typographical and mechanical errors. Copy-editing corrects grammar, consistency and house style. Line editing works on how sentences read. Developmental editing addresses whether the thing works at all. Attempting them simultaneously means doing all four badly, which is what most people call proofreading.

Automated checkers catch the mechanical errors and reliably miss the ones that matter, since a correctly spelled wrong word is invisible to them.

How to take part

  • Read it aloud. This single change catches more than any other.
  • Print it, or change the font, to break the familiar pattern.
  • Leave it overnight before the final pass.
  • Do one pass for one kind of error rather than everything at once.
  • Swap with somebody. A stranger's eye beats every technique on this list.
