Wonderful Weirdos Day
What the day is
Wonderful Weirdos Day is observed on September 9, in appreciation of the people who do not bother matching everyone around them.
Origin and background
The research on this begins with a famously simple experiment from the 1950s. Participants were asked which of three lines matched a reference line, a task so easy that people working alone got it right almost every time. Seated in a group of actors who confidently gave the same wrong answer, a substantial share of participants went along with the group at least once, and some did so repeatedly. They could see the right answer and said the wrong one anyway.
The finding that matters most came from a variation. When just one other person in the group broke from the majority, conformity collapsed, and it collapsed even when that dissenter gave a different wrong answer. What freed people was not being told the correct answer but discovering that disagreeing was permitted at all. A single visible deviation changes what everyone else believes is possible, which is the strongest practical argument for the people this day is about.
There is a second, narrower finding about how oddness is read. Studies of what has been called the red sneakers effect found that deliberate nonconformity can raise how competent and high-status a person seems, but only under a specific condition: observers must believe the deviation was a choice rather than an accident or an ignorance of the rules. The same behavior read as not knowing any better produces the opposite result.
None of which makes strangeness comfortable. Going against a group is genuinely unpleasant, and studies of social exclusion find it activates much the same neural machinery as physical pain, which is why the first dissenter is doing something that costs them real discomfort.
How to take part
- Be the first to disagree in a meeting. It is worth more than the second.
- Back the person who already did, which is most of what makes it work.
- Notice when you are agreeing because everyone else did.
- Tell somebody whose oddness you enjoy that you enjoy it.
