Thank You Note Day

What the day is

Thank You Note Day is observed on December 26, the morning after the largest gift exchange of the year, which is exactly when the notes are owed.

Origin and background

The origin of the observance is not documented. The obligation it enforces is a Victorian inheritance, from a period when written acknowledgment of hospitality and gifts was a formal social requirement rather than a courtesy.

The research on gratitude offers something more precise than an instruction to write. Studies distinguish between two ways of expressing thanks. One describes the benefit to yourself: how useful the gift was, how much you needed it, how you plan to use it. The other praises the giver: what the gift showed about their attention, their judgment, the trouble they went to.

Those two framings perform differently. Praising the giver consistently does more for the relationship, because it tells the other person they were seen accurately. Describing your own benefit is pleasant but largely reports back on you. Most thank-you notes default heavily to the second, which is why so many read as dutiful.

The other finding worth knowing is that people are wrong about how these notes land. Writers reliably overestimate how awkward a note will seem and underestimate how pleased the recipient will be, which is the mechanism keeping unwritten notes unwritten.

Promptness matters less than the content. A specific note in January beats a generic one on December 27.

How to take part

  • Write about the giver rather than the gift. Say what it showed that they knew about you.
  • Name one concrete detail. Generic warmth reads as a form letter.
  • Keep it to three or four sentences. Length is not the variable that matters.
  • Have children write their own, badly. The wobbly version is the one people keep.
  • Write one to somebody who gave you something other than an object this year.
