Thank a Mailman Day

What the day is

Thank a Mailman Day is observed on February 4. It recognizes letter carriers, and the February timing is apt: the route does not change because it is icy, dark at four in the afternoon, or well below freezing.

The name has aged, since a large share of carriers are not men, and the work is increasingly referred to as letter carrier or postal worker.

Origin and background

The origin of the observance is not documented, and no founder or sponsoring organization is reliably known.

The work is more physically demanding than it appears. Carriers walk many miles a day carrying loaded satchels, in every weather, and the job has one of the higher injury rates among common occupations. Dog bites are a recurring hazard, running to several thousand incidents a year in the United States alone, and heat illness is a serious risk in summer.

The volume mix has changed radically. Letter mail has declined for two decades while parcel volume has climbed with online shopping, which means heavier loads and longer time at each stop, on routes originally designed around envelopes.

One piece of folklore is worth correcting. The line about neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night is not an official postal motto and never has been. It is an inscription on the New York City post office building, adapted from Herodotus describing Persian messengers, and it stuck because it is a good sentence.

How to take part

  • Clear the path. Shoveling and salting the walk to your door is the single most useful thing you can do in February.
  • Keep dogs secured when deliveries are due, including friendly ones.
  • Leave something in summer as well as winter. Cold water on a hot route is appreciated more than seasonal chocolate.
  • Make the mailbox reachable: trim branches, clear snow from the approach, and move the car that blocks it.
  • Write a note to the local postmaster naming your carrier. Formal commendations count internally in a way a wave does not.
  • Check gift rules before giving anything substantial, since postal employees face limits on what they may accept.
