Techno Day

What the day is

Techno Day is observed on December 9. Techno is electronic dance music built around machine-made rhythm, and unlike most genres it has a traceable origin in a specific place and a specific group of people.

Origin and background

It came out of Belleville, a town outside Detroit, in the early and middle 1980s. Three school friends, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, are generally credited as its originators and are still referred to collectively as the Belleville Three.

Their influences were an unusual combination: the rigid electronic precision of Kraftwerk, the funk of Parliament and Funkadelic, Italian disco, and a Detroit radio show whose host played all of it in the same set. Atkins was recording as part of Cybotron before the genre had a name, producing tracks that already sounded like the thing that followed.

The name itself has a documented source that is better than most origin stories. Atkins took it from the writer Alvin Toffler, whose book about accelerating technological change used the phrase techno rebels. The label was fixed publicly by a 1988 British compilation presenting the music as the new dance sound of Detroit.

The distinction from house matters to people who care about it. House grew out of Chicago with roots in disco and gospel vocals and a warmer feel. Techno is colder and more machine-oriented, and its imagery is futurist, which many writers have connected to its emergence in a city whose industrial economy was visibly contracting.

It found its largest audience in Germany. After the Berlin Wall came down, abandoned buildings in the former East were opened as clubs, and the scene that grew there was built directly on records coming out of Detroit.

How to take part

  • Listen to early Cybotron and the first Detroit releases, which still sound ahead of schedule.
  • Follow the line forward to Berlin and hear what the same records became.
  • Read about Detroit in the 1980s, which is most of the context.
  • Try making something. Entry-level sequencing software costs nothing and the genre was built on limited equipment.
  • Go to a club that still respects the volume limits, or take earplugs.
