Techies Day
What the day is
Techies Day is observed on October 5. It began as a recruitment effort aimed at students and has drifted into something simpler: a day to acknowledge the technical staff who keep everyone else's systems working.
Origin and background
The day is generally traced to the late 1990s, when a severe shortage of technical workers during the dot-com boom prompted industry campaigns to interest school students in computing careers. It is commonly attributed to a technology recruitment company of the era, though the details are thinly documented and the original organization did not survive the downturn.
The shortage it responded to never really went away, but its shape changed. The field is far broader now than the programmer stereotype the original campaign had in mind, covering infrastructure, security, data, support, quality and a range of roles that did not exist in 1999.
The support side is the part that goes unrecognized. Help desk and systems staff work on a peculiar success metric: when they are doing well, nothing happens. Their visibility is almost entirely tied to failure, which makes it easy for organizations to underestimate what they do until something breaks badly.
Burnout is a real issue in the field, particularly in on-call roles where the job follows people home. That context is worth keeping in mind on a day nominally about appreciation.
How to take part
- Thank your IT team specifically. Name the thing they fixed rather than sending a general note.
- Make their job easier: restart before reporting, write down the actual error message, and say what you were doing when it happened.
- Stop asking for after-hours favors through personal channels. On-call rotations exist for a reason.
- If you work in technology, spend an hour with someone considering it. Informal conversations do more for recruitment than campaigns.
- Learn one technical thing you normally delegate. Understanding a little about how your own tools work reduces the load on everyone.
