Teacher’s Day

What the day is
Teacher's Day recognizes the people who teach. Unlike most observances, it has no single global date, and the variation is the most interesting thing about it.
UNESCO's World Teachers' Day is October 5, marking a 1966 international agreement on the status of teachers. Almost every country also keeps its own, on a date drawn from its own history.
Origin and background
The pattern is consistent: national teachers' days commemorate a person or moment that a country associates with education. India marks September 5, the birthday of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a philosopher and teacher who became president and reportedly asked that the day honor teachers rather than himself. Taiwan keeps September 28, the traditional birthday of Confucius. Argentina observes September 11 for the educator and president Domingo Sarmiento. Several countries in Eastern Europe kept October 5 after adopting the UNESCO date.
The United States runs Teacher Appreciation Week in early May, centered on a Tuesday, which is a school-community observance rather than a national holiday.
What the dates have in common is the argument underneath them. Teaching is one of the few professions that every other profession passes through, and every version of the day makes some version of the point that its status and pay do not reflect that.
The pressures are similar across very different systems: recruitment holds up better than retention, workload extends well past contracted hours, and experienced teachers leave mid-career at rates that create a permanent shortage of the most capable staff.
How to take part
- Contact a teacher who changed something for you and say specifically what it was. Teachers almost never find out how things turned out.
- Thank the staff at your own school, including teaching assistants and support staff.
- Ask what is actually needed. Supplies, volunteer time and attendance at governing meetings help more than gifts.
- Check which date applies where you are, since the answer depends entirely on the country.
- Resist framing teaching as a calling rather than a job. Goodwill does not pay rent, and that framing is how conditions stay poor.
