Take back your time day

What the day is

Take Back Your Time Day is observed on October 24. It challenges overwork, over-scheduling and what its organizers called time famine, and it emerged from an American movement in the early 2000s.

The date is an argument rather than a convenience. October 24 falls roughly nine weeks before the end of the year, and the claim behind it is that Americans work approximately nine weeks more per year than their counterparts in western Europe. The day marks the point at which, on that comparison, the extra work begins.

Origin and background

The underlying figures hold up reasonably well. The United States remains the only wealthy country with no statutory paid annual leave and no statutory paid parental leave, relying entirely on employer discretion. Most European countries guarantee four weeks or more by law, plus public holidays.

Annual hours worked per employee are correspondingly higher in the United States than in most of western Europe, though the gap has narrowed somewhat and varies considerably by country and sector.

A second pattern the movement identified has become more pronounced since. Even where leave exists, a substantial share of workers do not take all of it, citing workload, cost, or a belief that absence signals a lack of commitment. Unused leave is now a large liability on many corporate balance sheets.

The evidence on productivity complicates the simple story. Output per hour is high in several countries with shorter working years, and trials of four-day weeks have generally reported maintained or improved output with better reported wellbeing, though many such trials are small and self-selected.

How to take part

  • Check how much leave you have left, and book some of it today rather than intending to.
  • Take it properly: away, without email, and long enough to stop thinking about work.
  • Look at what fills your evenings. Over-scheduling outside work is part of the same problem.
  • If you manage people, visibly take your own leave. Teams copy what managers do rather than what they say.
  • Say no to one thing this week that you agreed to out of obligation.
