Stay at Home Because You are Well Day

What the day is

Stay at Home Because You are Well Day is observed on November 30. The joke is to call in well rather than sick, and it belongs to a set of invented observances whose creators claim rights over them.

Origin and background

Taken literally the day is bad advice, and the source that invented it says so itself. Taken as a comment on how sick leave actually works, it points at something well documented.

The phenomenon is called presenteeism: working while unwell. Research on it consistently finds that the productivity lost while people sit at their desks sick exceeds the productivity lost to their staying home, because impaired work takes longer, carries more errors, and in a shared workplace spreads the illness to everyone else. Measured in total cost, presenteeism is the larger problem and by far the less visible one.

What drives it is mostly structure rather than dedication. The United States has no federal requirement that private employers provide paid sick leave, which places it among a very small number of wealthy countries without one. Access is uneven and drops off sharply at lower wages, so the workers least able to lose a day's pay are often those in food service and care work, where working sick does the most harm.

The other half of the joke has aged into ordinary practice. Time off taken for rest rather than illness is now a normal part of leave policy in many organizations, and large amounts of paid vacation go unused every year in the United States, which is the thing the day is really needling.

How to take part

  • Take a day you have already earned, booked properly and in advance.
  • Check how much unused leave you are carrying. Most people underestimate it.
  • Stay home when you are genuinely ill, which is the serious version of the same point.
  • If you manage people, say plainly that you do not want them in while sick. Policy on its own convinces nobody.
  • Do not actually call in well. The day's own creators attach a warning to it.
