Punch Day

What the day is

Punch Day is observed on September 20. It marks punch in the original sense: a large mixed drink made in a bowl and ladled out, alcoholic or not, meant to be shared rather than poured one glass at a time.

Punch is older than the cocktail and works on a different logic. A cocktail is built to order for one person; punch is assembled in advance for a room, which is why it survives at weddings, school parties and holiday tables where nobody wants to stand behind a bar all evening.

Origin and background

The origin of the observance is not documented, and no founder or sponsoring organization is reliably known.

The drink's history is better recorded. Punch reached England with sailors and traders working in South Asia in the seventeenth century, and its name is commonly traced to a word for five, counting the five elements of the original formula: spirit, sugar, citrus, water and spice. That etymology is widely repeated and still debated, so it is worth holding loosely. What is not in doubt is the ratio it produced, one part sour to two parts sweet to three of strong and four of weak, a proportion bartenders still reach for.

Punch dominated social drinking for well over a century before individually mixed drinks displaced it, and the bowl itself became a piece of household silver worth showing off. The non-alcoholic versions most people meet first, at children's parties and church halls, are direct descendants of the same idea.

How to take part

Making one is mostly about planning, since the work happens before anyone arrives.

  • Use one large block of ice instead of cubes. It melts far more slowly, so the punch dilutes gently rather than turning watery within the hour.
  • Balance the sour and the sweet before adding anything fizzy, and taste it at room temperature, since cold mutes sweetness.
  • Add sparkling ingredients last, just before serving, or they will be flat by the time the second round comes.
  • Make a non-alcoholic bowl alongside rather than as an afterthought. Strong tea, citrus and spice give it structure that fruit juice alone does not.

A bowl and ladle are traditional but optional. A large pitcher does the same job and is easier to refill.
