Plush Animal Lover’s Day
What the day is
Plush Animal Lover's Day is observed on October 28. It covers soft toys generally rather than bears specifically, which get their own days elsewhere in the calendar.
Origin and background
The origin of the observance is not documented.
The commercial soft toy dates to the 1880s in Germany, where Margarete Steiff, a seamstress who had survived polio and used a wheelchair, began making felt animals. Her company's jointed bear, produced from the early 1900s, coincided almost exactly with the American teddy bear boom, and the two developed in parallel.
Plush itself is a fabric with a long pile, originally silk or mohair, now overwhelmingly synthetic. That shift is what made soft toys cheap, washable and safe for infants, and it also made them disposable in a way the early mohair bears were not.
The psychology is well studied. Soft toys function as transitional objects, helping young children manage separation and self-regulate, and the attachment is to the specific object rather than the type: an identical replacement is noticed immediately and usually rejected. Retention into adulthood is far more common than people admit in non-anonymous surveys, and carries no particular significance.
Safety standards changed the product considerably. Glass eyes on wire, loose seams and detachable parts were all normal once and are now regulated, which is why antique soft toys should be kept away from small children regardless of sentimental value.
How to take part
- Repair one rather than replacing it. Restuffing and restitching is straightforward and preserves the specific object that matters.
- Wash carefully: surface clean by hand where possible, and check for old jointing or wire before soaking anything.
- Donate spares to a hospital, shelter or charity that accepts them, and check their condition rules first.
- Keep antique toys out of reach of infants.
- Ask an older relative what happened to theirs. The answers are often surprisingly vivid.
