National Peanut Festival

What the day is

The National Peanut Festival is an autumn agricultural fair held in Dothan, Alabama, in the heart of the American peanut-growing region. It runs over a stretch of days at the end of the harvest, with livestock and produce judging, a parade, midway rides and a great deal of peanut cookery.

Origin and background

The festival dates to 1938, and George Washington Carver was the guest of honor at the first one. That connection is the reason his name attaches to the event in most accounts of it.

Carver's reputation deserves more precision than it usually gets. He was an agricultural scientist at Tuskegee Institute whose central work was soil exhaustion: decades of cotton monoculture had stripped Southern soil, and he promoted crop rotation with nitrogen-fixing legumes, peanuts among them, to restore it. He then developed a long list of possible peanut products, commonly cited as over 300, to give farmers a reason to grow the rotation crop and a market for it.

The popular telling turns this into a story about inventing peanut butter, which he did not do; versions of ground peanut paste predate him considerably. Most of his 300 uses were never commercialized either. His real achievement was agricultural extension work with poor Black farmers, carried out through demonstration wagons and plain-language bulletins, and it is less catchy and more substantial than the invention story.

The peanut itself is a legume rather than a nut, and it fruits underground, which is why harvesting means lifting the whole plant and inverting it to dry.

How to take part

  • Go, if you are within reach of southeast Alabama in the autumn. It is a working agricultural fair rather than a tourist event.
  • Boil some green peanuts if you can find them, which is the regional preparation and very different from roasted.
  • Read about Carver's extension work rather than the invention myth.
  • Make peanut butter at home. Roasted peanuts and a food processor, four minutes, nothing else needed.
  • Be careful with allergies at any peanut event; they are among the most severe food allergies.
