Nametag Day

What the day is

Nametag Day is observed on March 11. Names are unusually difficult to remember, and the reason is structural rather than a failure of attention.

Origin and background

The classic demonstration involves a single word. Show people a photograph and tell some of them the man is a baker, and others that his surname is Baker. Later, the ones told his occupation remember the word far more reliably than the ones told his name. Nothing differs except what the word was doing. An occupation connects to a web of existing knowledge, ovens, bread, flour, early mornings, while a surname is an arbitrary label attached to a face with nothing to hook it to. Names are hard because they mean nothing.

Names also behave strangely once learned. Hearing your own name captures attention even when you are not listening, which is why it cuts through a noisy room, and people detect their own name in conversation they were ignoring entirely.

The nametag is a practical fix for a real cognitive limit, and there is a convention worth knowing. It belongs on the right side of the chest, because a handshake turns the body slightly and draws the other person's eye along the right arm toward it. Placed on the left it sits in the blind spot of that movement.

The most significant use of a nametag in recent years began in a hospital. A doctor in England, herself terminally ill and receiving treatment, noticed how many staff treated her without introducing themselves, and started a campaign encouraging every clinician to begin with their name and role. It spread through health services internationally and is credited with changing introduction practice in a great many hospitals.

How to take part

  • Wear it on the right, which almost everyone gets wrong.
  • Repeat a new name aloud immediately, which is the cheapest memory aid available.
  • Ask again rather than avoiding using someone's name for months.
  • Introduce yourself by name and role, particularly if you work with patients or clients.
  • Write it large enough to read from conversational distance.
