Letter Writing Day

What the day is

Letter Writing Day is observed on December 7. It asks for a written letter, on paper, sent to somebody.

Origin and background

The origin of the observance is not documented. The decline it responds to is easy to measure. Personal correspondence is now a very small fraction of what moves through the mail, and the volume of first-class mail in the United States has fallen steeply since its peak at the start of this century.

The most actionable research here concerns a specific mistake people make. Studies asking participants to write a letter of appreciation and then predict the recipient's reaction found that writers consistently underestimated how surprised and how pleased the recipient would be, while overestimating how awkward the letter would seem. The barrier to writing is not that letters fail to land. It is that people wrongly expect them to land badly.

The related finding on gratitude is among the sturdier results in the field. Writing a specific letter of thanks to someone who was never properly thanked produces a measurable lift in the writer's own mood, and the effect is larger when the letter is actually delivered.

There is also an archival argument. Historians reconstruct ordinary life largely from letters, because correspondence survives in attics and archives in a way that requires nobody to have planned it. The digital equivalent mostly does not survive. Accounts get closed, platforms fold, inboxes are deleted, and formats stop opening. It is plausible that this period will leave future historians far less personal material than the nineteenth century did.

How to take part

  • Write to someone who did something for you that you never properly acknowledged.
  • Be specific. A named detail carries more than a paragraph of general warmth.
  • Do not wait to feel eloquent. The research says the recipient is not grading the prose.
  • Send it rather than filing it away. Delivery is what produces the effect.
  • Write to someone who cannot easily write back, such as an elderly relative or a person in hospital.
