Go Bowling Day

What the day is

Go Bowling Day is observed on February 25. Bowling is old enough that a version of it was found in an Egyptian grave, and the ten-pin form was standardized in the United States in the late nineteenth century.

Origin and background

The mechanics of a strike are not what they look like. A bowling ball is far too narrow to touch all ten pins, and in a well-thrown strike it contacts only about four of them. Everything else falls to pin-on-pin collision, which is why the ideal line enters the pocket between the head pin and the one beside it rather than hitting the front pin square. A ball straight into the head pin tends to leave splits, because the energy scatters outward symmetrically instead of driving pins sideways across the deck.

The hook that skilled players put on the ball exists to improve that entry angle. A ball rolling straight down the lane arrives nearly parallel to the pins; one that curves in arrives at an angle that carries the deflection across the whole rack.

The lane is also not uniform, which surprises casual players. Oil is applied to the surface in a pattern, heavier in the middle and lighter at the edges, and it both protects the lane and governs how far the ball travels before gripping and turning. House patterns are relatively forgiving; competition patterns are deliberately not, and the oil moves as play continues, so the lane a league bowler faces in the last game differs from the first.

The 7-10 split is the famous one because it is close to impossible: two pins at opposite corners with nothing between them, convertible only by clipping one pin sideways into the other.

How to take part

  • Aim for the pocket beside the head pin rather than at the head pin itself.
  • Use the arrows on the lane rather than looking at the pins, which are too far away to aim by.
  • Ask for a ball that fits. Most casual players use one far too heavy.
  • Watch where the oil is by how the ball behaves, and adjust across the approach.
  • Take someone who has not been in years. Nearly everyone enjoys it more than they expect.
