Fish Fingers and Custard Day

What the day is

Fish Fingers and Custard Day is observed on April 3, the date in 2010 when an episode of Doctor Who was first broadcast in which a newly regenerated Doctor works through a kitchen rejecting everything in it and settles on that pairing. The day is a fan invention, and it has stuck.

Origin and background

The scene exists for a practical reason. A regeneration leaves the show with an actor the audience does not yet know, and the writers needed a short sequence that established a personality fast without explaining anything. Food does that efficiently. A character who turns down every reasonable option and lands somewhere absurd reads immediately as strange but harmless, which is exactly the impression required at that moment.

The combination is also less unhinged than it sounds. A fish finger is mostly breadcrumb, and breadcrumb is neutral: a crisp, salty, starchy coating with far more in common with a biscuit than with fish. Custard is sweet, smooth and scented with vanilla. Set the fish itself aside and what you have is crunchy salted starch dipped in sweet vanilla sauce, which describes several desserts nobody objects to at all.

Salt against sweet is a thoroughly established pairing, and hot against cold and crisp against soft are both standard contrasts. What makes this one feel transgressive is not the flavors but the category violation: fish belongs to dinner and custard belongs to pudding, so the objection is really about filing rather than taste.

Whether it is actually nice is a separate question, and opinion among people who have genuinely tried it is split.

How to take part

  • Try it. It costs very little and the anecdote is worth more than the ingredients.
  • Use thick vanilla custard, warm, with fish fingers straight from the oven.
  • Watch the episode, which is where the whole thing comes from.
  • Note that the salty-sweet logic is sound even if the result is not.
