Earth creation day
What the day is
Earth Creation Day is observed on October 23. The date comes from James Ussher, Archbishop of Armagh, who concluded that creation began on the night before October 23 in the year 4004 BC.
Origin and background
Ussher is easy to mock and does not deserve it. He published his chronology in 1650 as a serious work of scholarship, and the method was the right one for the evidence he had. He summed the generations recorded in scripture, then anchored that sequence to secular history by tying it to dated events in Babylonian and Persian records, working back from the death of Nebuchadnezzar through an astronomical canon that was the best chronological reference then available. Dating the past by cross-referencing textual records was exactly how historians worked, and Ussher was unusually careful at it.
What gave the figure its extraordinary reach was a publishing decision rather than a scholarly one. From the early eighteenth century, printers began setting Ussher's dates in the margins of English Bibles. Readers encountered 4004 BC printed alongside the text itself, and across generations the number acquired an authority the author had never claimed for it.
The modern figure comes from a different kind of evidence entirely. Radioactive decay proceeds at a fixed rate, so the proportions of parent and daughter isotopes in a rock record elapsed time directly. Measurements of lead isotopes in meteorite material in the 1950s put the age of the solar system at roughly 4.54 billion years, and that figure has held up under repeated testing.
There is a footnote worth knowing. The scientist who established that age needed uncontaminated samples, which forced him to trace the lead pollution wrecking his measurements. It came from leaded gasoline, and his subsequent campaign helped get it banned.
How to take part
- Read about Ussher as a scholar rather than a punchline. The reasoning is genuinely impressive.
- Look up how radiometric dating actually works, which is simpler than people expect.
- Notice how a marginal note in a printed book became received fact.
- Find out the age of the rock where you live. Most regions have an accessible geological survey.
- Read about the lead contamination story, which changed public health worldwide.
