Daniel Boone Day

What the day is
Daniel Boone Day is observed on June 7. The date is tied to 1769, when Boone and a small party crossed the Appalachians and reached the Kentucky bluegrass country on a long hunting expedition.
It is worth stating plainly that this is not his birthday. Boone was born in Pennsylvania in the autumn of 1734, and the June date marks the Kentucky expedition rather than his birth.
Origin and background
Boone was a hunter, surveyor and land agent rather than the buckskin folk hero of later retelling. His significant practical achievement was the Wilderness Road: in 1775 he led a party that cut a route through the Cumberland Gap, and tens of thousands of settlers followed it west over the following decades.
The consequences were not incidental to the story. That migration displaced Shawnee, Cherokee and other nations from land they held and hunted, and the period was violent in both directions. Boone himself was captured by Shawnee in 1778 and adopted into the tribe for several months before escaping, an episode that complicates the simple frontier narrative considerably.
His own life ended in financial failure. Boone lost most of his Kentucky land claims through defective titles and legal disputes, left the state in debt, and spent his last decades in Missouri.
The legend grew separately from the man, boosted by a popular 1784 account of his adventures, then by dime novels and eventually television. The coonskin cap he is always drawn in was not his; he reportedly disliked them and wore a felt hat.
How to take part
- Read a modern biography rather than the folk version. The real life is stranger and more ambiguous.
- Visit the Cumberland Gap if you are within reach; the pass itself explains the history better than any account.
- Read something about the Shawnee side of the same events.
- Separate the man from the myth-making. Boone was a working frontiersman who became a commercial character while still alive, and resented some of it.
