CD Player Day

What the day is

CD Player Day is observed on October 1, marking the date in 1982 when Sony's CDP-101 went on sale in Japan as the first commercial compact disc player. It was expensive, roughly the price of a decent used car in today's terms, and it began the fastest format change the music industry had seen.

Origin and background

The compact disc came out of a joint effort between Sony and Philips, who agreed a common standard rather than fighting a format war, having watched what competing videotape standards had done. The specification they settled on, later known as the Red Book, fixed the sampling rate at 44.1 kHz and 16-bit depth, and those numbers governed recorded music for the next two decades.

The disc's size has its own persistent legend, that the capacity was set so a particular recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony would fit on one disc. The story is widely repeated and the details vary with the telling, which is a reasonable sign to treat it as folklore that may contain some truth.

Adoption was rapid. CDs passed vinyl and then cassettes through the late 1980s, and the format dominated into the 2000s before downloads and streaming displaced it. Two side effects outlasted the discs: the loudness war, in which digital mastering was pushed ever louder at the cost of dynamic range, and the album as a fixed object, which streaming has largely dissolved.

Physical media has not disappeared. Vinyl has recovered strongly, and CDs remain the cheapest way to own music outright, which matters when catalogs vanish from streaming services without warning.

How to take part

  • Play a CD start to finish without skipping. Sequencing was a deliberate craft and streaming habits erase it.
  • Dig out the booklet. Liner notes, credits and artwork were part of the purchase and have no real equivalent now.
  • Rip what you own to lossless files. Discs rot, and the data is worth preserving.
  • Visit a charity shop. Used CDs are close to free and the racks are full of albums nobody streams.
  • Clean a scratched disc from the center outward, never in circles, which follows the track and makes errors worse.
