Cat Day

What the day is

Cat Day is observed on October 29. It was established in the United States by an animal welfare advocate in the mid-2000s, with adoption as its explicit purpose, and it sits in autumn partly because shelters are still working through the summer's kittens.

Several other cat days exist on other dates internationally, which is a reasonable reflection of how many people keep them.

Origin and background

Domestication happened differently for cats than for dogs. Genetic and archaeological evidence points to the Near East and to grain agriculture: stored grain drew rodents, rodents drew wildcats, and the least fearful cats did well around settlements. Humans did not select cats for work so much as tolerate the ones that turned up, which is why cats remain far closer to their wild ancestors than dogs are to wolves.

That history shows in the behavior. Cats retain a complete predatory sequence even when well fed, which is why a cat with a full bowl still hunts, and why interactive play matters for indoor cats rather than being optional enrichment.

Their communication with people is also somewhat bespoke. Adult cats rarely meow at each other; the vocalization is aimed largely at humans, and individual cats develop sounds their own household learns to interpret. The slow blink appears to function as a genuine affiliative signal, and it can be returned.

The welfare argument is straightforward arithmetic. Neutering prevents far more suffering than any amount of rescuing after the fact, and black cats are consistently adopted more slowly than others, a bias with no basis whatever.

How to take part

  • Adopt from a shelter rather than buying, and consider an adult cat. Kittens are never the ones waiting.
  • Neuter, microchip, and keep the registration details current.
  • Play with a wand toy for ten minutes and let the cat actually catch it at the end. An unresolved hunt is frustrating rather than satisfying.
  • Add vertical space. Shelves and a tall perch matter more to a cat than floor area.
  • Try a slow blink and wait. A surprising number of cats return it.
  • Donate litter or food to a shelter, which they need constantly and rarely receive.
