Card Making Day
What the day is
World Card Making Day is observed on the first Saturday in October. It is a papercrafting day: people make greeting cards by hand, share them online, and stock up on cards for the winter holidays while there is still time.
The timing is practical. Making a stack of cards in early October is the difference between sending handmade cards in December and buying them in a hurry.
Origin and background
The day was launched in 2006 by Paper Crafts magazine and grew through craft retailers, blogs and later social platforms, where card making has a large and active following. Manufacturers release products around it and shops run demonstrations, so it functions as both a hobby day and a trade event.
Greeting cards themselves have an older history. Commercially printed cards took off in Britain in the nineteenth century once postal reform made sending them cheap, and the industry that followed made card sending a mass habit. Handmade cards have always run alongside that, and have become more visible as the commercial market has shrunk under competition from messaging and social media.
That shrinkage is part of the appeal. A physical card is now unusual enough to be noticed, which is precisely why people keep the ones they are sent.
How to take part
The barrier is lower than the craft aisle suggests. Good cardstock, a bone folder and a decent adhesive will carry almost any design.
- Score before folding. A scored fold is crisp; an unscored one cracks and looks homemade in the wrong way.
- Work in batches. Cutting ten card bases at once takes barely longer than cutting one.
- Keep the design simple. Negative space and one focal point beat a crowded front almost every time.
- Check the finished size against standard envelopes before you build the whole run.
- Write something specific inside. The handmade front is the gift; the sentence that mentions a real detail is what gets kept.
Children's versions need nothing but folded paper and whatever is in the drawer, and those are usually the cards that survive longest on a refrigerator.
