What the day is

Job Action Day is kept in early November. It originated with American career and job search publishers as a prompt to take one concrete step on employment rather than deferring it.

Despite the name, it has nothing to do with industrial action. Job action here means action on your own job.

Origin and background

The timing addresses a widespread assumption that hiring stops for the year in November. It does slow, but the belief is stronger than the reality, and it produces a predictable pattern: candidates stop applying in November and December, competition thins, and the people who keep going face a smaller field. Hiring managers often have budget to use before year end and vacancies they would rather not carry into January.

The other pattern worth knowing is that a large share of roles are filled through networks rather than advertisements, and weak ties matter more than close ones. The people most useful in a job search are typically acquaintances rather than close friends, because they move in different circles and know about openings you would not otherwise hear of.

Applications themselves are increasingly filtered by software before a person sees them, which makes plain formatting and the actual language of the job description more consequential than design.

The most common failure in a job search is not skill or luck but stopping. Search activity drops sharply after a run of rejections, which is exactly when persistence is most valuable.

How to take part
