Biographers Day

Biographies dominate the publishing industryâ??s bestseller lists. However biographical writing has not always enjoyed such popularity, and biographical conventions have evolved considerably over the centuries.

The modern style of biography originated in the eighteenth-century and is most closely associated with James Boswell, who undertook an extraordinary biography of his charismatic companion Samuel Johnson â?? poet, journalist, critic, and writer of the first English dictionary.

Warm, expansive, uncompromising, and exhaustively detailed, Boswellâ??s â??Life of Samuel Johnsonâ?? established a new way of writing biography and shaped the emergence of the biography format that is popular today.

Biographers Day commemorates the first meeting of Boswell and Johnson in 1763 in a London bookshop and itâ??s a great day to celebrate the genre. Why not mark Biographers Day by reading a new biography, revisting an old favourite, or perhaps even taking a look into Boswellâ??s â??Life of Samuel Johnsonâ?? itself.

Pizza Party Day

‘Mmm, pizzaaaa!’ as Joey Tribbiani from ‘Friends’ might once have said, or was it Michelangelo from ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’? Anyway, there is clearly nothing more delicious than a large pizza with its doughy yet crisp base, and its choice variety of savoury toppings, tenderly amalgamated with molten cheese, onion and pepper.

Here are some ideas on how you might mark Pizza Party Day:

  • Have your own pizza party and invite all your friends to your house to make their own pizzas or at least choose their own toppings. Inexpensive and fun!
  • Visit a local pizza restaurant, ideally one where the chefs toss the pizza dough about in front of you, for an authentic Italian pizza-eating experience.
  • Spend the day meditating about great pizzas you have enjoyed in the past, maybe compiling an all-time top ten of your favourite toppings.

Buon appetito!

Wear Purple for Peace Day

When: Always on May 16th

It's Wear Purple for Peace Day. You'd think that this day originated in protest of a particular war or conflict. Or, perhaps it should have been conceived by the UN, or another peacemaking or peace keeping group. Our extensive research found no evidence supporting the origin of this holiday stemming from these sources.

Rather, we found this day to be a stellar event. It seems some of you out there fear that aliens from outer space consider earthlings to be too hostile (you've got that right). As a result, they have yet to visit or make contact with us. So, some of you (originators unknown) decided to promote world peace by establishing Wear Purple for Peace Day.

The goal of Wear Purple for Peace Day is to make the world a peaceful place and, of course, encourage alien species to make contact with earth.

Do you want to meet aliens for another planet? Me, too! So, lets all wear purple for peace today.

""I wonder if these earthlings are peaceful!?""

Love a Tree Day

When: Always on May 16th

It's Love a Tree Day. So, go out and give a tree a great big hug.

Trees are a good thing. They give us shade, comfort and warmth. They give off oxygen, too. There are many, many benefits provided by trees. So, you have good reason to love a tree or two.

Everyone has a favorite kind of tree. Use today to identify a tree you love, and to pamper it. Give it a trim. Eliminate competitors around it. Feed it a dose of fertilizer. Tree spikes work great. And, give the tree some water, if it is thirsty.

Important Note: On Love a Tree Day, your attention must be turned toward trees. A bush or a shrub just won't do.
