  • May 8: National Student Nurses Day
  • May 6th: National Nurses Day
  • Wednesday of Nurse's Week: School Nurses Day
  • May 12: International Nurse's Day
  • November 14: Operating Room Nurse Day

What:

National Nurses Week, and a number of specific Nurses Days during this week, provides recognition to nurses for their contributions and commitment to quality health care. It brings awareness to the importance of nurses in the care , comfort, and well being of all of us, and especially our children and the aging, and those in poor health.

Origin of Nurses Day:

The roots of International Nurses Day goes back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a ""Nurse Day"" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not officially made. But, this day was born and eventually gained national recognition.

International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12, because this it's the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

In 2003, National School Nurses Day was moved from the  fourth Wednesday in January to the Wednesday of Nurses Week. Many websites, still record School Nurses Day in January, unaware of this change.

No Homework Day

Here’s one you may wish to hide from your children! Although if they don’t know about it, then there would not be many folks left to celebrate No Homework Day!

That’s right, this is the day where children can tell their teachers and parents in complete honesty that they will not be doing their homework, in order to mark this special day. Spend some long hours on that favourite video game, go and hang out at the mall with friends, or just go to bed and catch up on needed sleep! Whatever is decided, children, university students, and even some of you mature students with impending homework deadlines can take a well-deserved break.

This is probably not a popular holiday with teachers and parents! But it is a day nevertheless to say put down the books and relax. (Unless, of course, you have a big exam or paper due the next day!)

Buddha Day

Buddha's Birthday (Nepali: बुद्ध यन्त) the birthday of the Prince Siddhartha Gautama, is a holiday traditionally celebrated in Mahayana Buddhism. According to the Theravada Tripitaka scriptures[which?] (from Pali, meaning ""three baskets""), Gautama was born in Lumbini in modern-day Nepal, around the year 563 BCE, and raised in Kapilavastu.[2][3]

According to this legend, briefly after the birth of young prince Gautama, an astrologer named Asita visited the young prince's fatherâ??King Å?uddhodanaâ??and prophesied that Siddhartha would either become a great king or renounce the material world to become a holy man, depending on whether he saw what life was like outside the palace walls.

Å?uddhodana was determined to see his son become a king, so he prevented him from leaving the palace grounds. But at age 29, despite his father's efforts, Gautama ventured beyond the palace several times. In a series of encountersâ??known in Buddhist literature as the four sightsâ??he learned of the suffering of ordinary people, encountering an old man, a sick man, a corpse and, finally, an ascetic holy man, apparently content and at peace with the world. These experiences prompted Gautama to abandon royal life and take up a spiritual quest.
